What is good therapy?

Good therapy depends on a good relationship. If there is openness, trust, safety and caring between client and therapist, they can explore any realm of life together, and growth and healing will happen. It's not an easy process; it is challenging, and involves facing difficult truths. The reward is not only freedom from pain, but also feeling more fully human and alive.

I use an eclectic approach in that I will use different techniques and schools of thought depending on the client's needs. For example, I will often help clients challenge negative or destructive beliefs about themselves and the world. I may help explore patterns of relationships, some of which go back to childhood. I may coach you on ways you can relax & deal with stress better. We may explore together what gives your life meaning. I try to use all these elements in a creative way, with warmth and a sense of humor, suited to the needs of the client.

"I believe that a different therapy must be constructed for each patient because each has a unique story."
-- Irvin D. Yalom, M.D., therapist, writer, professor
